Rainey, a professional designer who has made watercolor a cornerstone of her work, here offers readers a month's worth of daily step-by-step lessons in this spontaneous and occasionally unpredictable medium. Beginning with a section on basic tools, materials, color principles, and simple techniques, the guide then moves on to more complex topics including representing form, value, complicated shapes, space, and light. The final section brings all these skills together for a few more involved projects. Goals, as well as estimated completion time, are helpfully stated at the start of each lesson. Subjects are both abstract and realistic, featuring plants, animals, still life, and landscapes. VERDICT Readers of beginning or intermediate artistic skill levels may want to renew this book to be sure of completing all 30 lessons.
