An electrifying historical adventure about a ring of bold and resourceful women thieves in post-World War II London.

Gangland was a man's world. Or so they thought. The women knew different.

London, 1946. The city struggles to rebuild itself after the devastation of the Blitz. Food is rationed, good jobs are scarce, and even the most honest families are forced to take a bit of "crooked" just to survive.

Alice Diamond, the Queen of Thieves, rules over her all-female gang with a bejeweled fist. Her "hoisters" are expert shoplifters, the scourge of London's upscale boutiques and departments stores. Their lucrative business stealing and fencing luxury goods always carries the threat of violence; Alice packs a razor, and has been known to use her heavy rows of diamond rings like brass knuckles.

Young Nell is a teenager from the slums, hiding a secret pregnancy and facing a desperately uncertain future when Alice takes her under her wing. Before long, Nell is experiencing all the dangers—and glamourous trappings—that comes with this underworld existence. Alice wants Nell to be a useful weapon in her ongoing war against crime boss Billy Sullivan's gang of rival thieves. But Nell has a hidden agenda of her own, and is not to be underestimated. The more she is manipulated by both Alice and Billy, the more her hunger for revenge grows.

As Nell embraces the rich spoils of crime and the seedy underbelly of London, will she manage to carve out her own path to power and riches? Might she even crown herself the Queen of Thieves?

Marsh's (Her Father's Daughter) historical novel tells of the impossible choices people make when facing poverty and trauma. Alice Diamond is quick-witted, proud and hard as a rock. She leads an all-female gang, the Forty Thieves, who shoplift jewelry and clothes and sell them on the black market in post-war London. She meets 20-year-old Nell on the same day Nell learns her lover is cheating on her. Nell is pregnant and she lives with her angry, abusive dad and her nervous, cowed mother. Alice offers Nell a job as a shoplifter, knowing her youthful, innocent looks will prove handy. Initially, Nell finds the idea of easy money and a close-knit thieving squad thrilling. But when she has to give up her newborn son because she doesn't have a husband or legal income, she feels a fiery anger and vengefulness that wasn't there before. She vows to knock Alice off her throne as the Queen of Thieves. The two women's battle to outwit each other makes for an entertaining and diverting read. VERDICT The author's writing style is often clever and sharp, but sometimes settles into cliche. The story comes to a satisfying, if predictable, ending. For readers who have a fondness for English characters.--Leah Shepherd

Set in post-WWII London, where rationing was harsh, a group of working-class women defy tradition and the law to make their lives better. In a time when the average lower-class girl worked in the factories and then stayed home once she was married, Alice Diamond, "Queen of Thieves," decided that she was going to continue running her gang of hoisters (shoplifters) even though everyone knew that gangland was for men. The tale follows Alice as she meets Nell, an abused and unexpectedly pregnant girl from a very poor part of London. Alice takes advantage of Nell's naivete and brings her into the gang. But once Nell begins to understand the lay of gangland and the fierce rivalry between Alice and Billy Sullivan's gang, she begins to craft her own path to revenge. The use of British jargon and dialect can be initially challenging, but it helps to set the world of the characters. For the reader who enjoys gangland tales and exploring the dark underbelly of London in the late 1940s, the story woven between Alice and Nell will titillate and engage.
